Who we are
Four Generations
In 1870, Ramon Calvet opened a wood warehouse in Gràcia, a neighbourhood of Barcelona. His son, Isidre Calvet, learnt the business from his father working there. When Ramon passed away, the company was sold, because Isidre was too young yet to run it alone, he was only fifteen years old.
Isidre started working for another warehouse in the same neighbourhood called Fustes Nonell, which was an important company in the wood industry. After working there more than 25 years, a financially stronger company asked him to open a bigger warehouse than the one operated by Fustes Nonell.
Isidre accepted their proposal, so they opened the new warehouse, Maderas Sarda, and started leading its commercial department. The company quickly expanded and opened more stores.
Some years later, the most important wood companies in the national market, Maderas Sarda and Maderas Colomer became merged and a new company was created, Maderas Colomer Sarda.
The newly formed company had five warehouses in Barcelona, one in Olot and another one in Terrassa. And, when Zona Franca was built, in Barcelona’s Port district, they opened their biggest warehouse there.
Passion and experience
After Isidre Calvets’s death, his son, Ramon Calvet, continued in the wood business.
Being very young and following the advice of his father, he started his career in the biggest factory in Barcelona, called C.A.P.A (Compañía Anónima Poductos Africanos). This company had concessions in Equatorial Guinea and imported all their wood in logs from Africa, to manufacture boards, veneers and doors.
It was a large company, with more than 350 workers, located in the neighbourhood of Casa Antunez, on the outskirts of Barcelona.
Ramon Calvet worked for 17 years in C.A.P.A., until a company specialized in veneers, Maderas Esteban, offered him the opportunity to work with them. This company was going to open a new warehouse and needed a person with an in depth knowledge of the business of wood, especially concerning veneers, to lead it.
Ramon Calvet accepted their offer and left C.A.P. A., the “University of Wood”, as it was known, to join Maderas Esteban company, and they put him in charge of their warehouse, where he stayed another 17 years.
In 1984, because of an economic crisis, Maderas Esteban closed. But, as he had a great experience on the wood sector, and a huge list of contacts, he rapidly contacted a French company with a very good reputation, Jura Placage.
This company was the first producer of oak veneers in Europe, and their boss, Mr. Gerard Cour, was a very important businessman, who was well admired throughout Europe.
Gerard Cour proposed to Ramon Calvet to open a warehouse in Spain, in the environs of Barcelona.
Perfection is the key
Thus, on September 1984, they opened a warehouse called Foresta del Valles Placage, in a neat industrial unit in Santiga industrial park, in Barberá del Vallès.
During the next 12 years, Mr Calvet travelled around Europe, having contact with the most important wood companies, and always maintaining a close collaboration with Jura Placage and Mr. Gerard Cour.
In 1996, when Mr. Cour died, Ramon Calvet left the business of wood warehouses and started to work as broker of some important wood companies in Spain and abroad. This resulted, in 2000, with the creation of the current company: Fusta Gest.
During the 3rd generation of the Calvet surname, it is important to also mention that the second son of Isidre Calvet, Josep Calvet, also worked in the wood business, working as commercial head of the company Comercial Okoume, a wood warehouse in Barcelona.
We therefore arrive to 2003, when the 4th generation, Oriol Calvet, took over the company Fusta Gest. The Company has become more international and is not working only in Europe, but around the world, running with a large amount of products in the wood industry.
